Prompt: In this module, hundreds of web-based educational games are introduced. Given the plethora of the online games, making informed decision about the educational games is a vital skill for a teacher. Please identify five games that are appropriate for your subject discipline and justify your choices by citing sources introduced in this course.
My Top 5 Educational Games (Web-based)
The State of South Carolina provides teachers with a variety of standards that teachers are responsible for teaching to his or her students in each grade level. Usually, these standards are not leveled by importance. However, this year due to COVID-19 priority standards have been identified in all subject areas. These priority standards are identified as foundational standards that students will need to be successful in to move forward in their learning. With this in mind, I have chosen my top 5 educational games for my students to play to practice a variety of skills in math.
Math Games Make Learning FUN!
3.NSF.1 Develop an understanding of fractions (i.e., denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10) as numbers.
c. A fraction is a number that can be represented on a number line based on counts of a unit fraction;
Hit the Unit Fraction is a riveting platform to test the number line skills of Third Grade students which they will be hooked on instantly. To play the game you have to spot a unit fraction on a given number line and point your cannon that way and shoot. If you're close enough, the cannon will be able to shoot down the helicopter and bang! you've done it. The game has stimulating visuals and asks for strategic thinking which children love to have a go at since early ages. And they are strengthening their number line skills on the go having too much fun. To play, click the image above!

3.NSBT.1 Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
Soccer Math: Rounding provides a fun way for kids to practice rounding numbers. There are three different levels of difficulty. Get five correct in-a-row to take penalty shots!
1.Tens & Hundreds
2.Tens, Hundreds & Thousands
3.Tens, Hundreds, Thousands & Decimals

3.MDA.6 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
There are some concepts in math that are hard for kids to understand because they are difficult to relate to real life circumstances. This is not the case with perimeter and area, because these skills will be used for the rest of kids' lives in so many different situations. That being said, it's extremely important to have a strong understanding of how to calculate perimeter and area. Our online perimeter and area game for kids does this and more. Upon completing this game, kids will be able to calculate the area and perimeter of simple polygons, rectangles and squares.

3.MDA.3 Collect, organize, classify, and interpret data with multiple categories and draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent the data.
What do germs have to do with graphing? When you're playing this game...plenty! Help Roly get better by trapping his cold germs, then counting up the total in a bar graph. Not only a silly story that almost every kid can relate to, this game is a way of collecting and organizing data that will be understandable to second graders and third graders.

3.ATO.3 Solve real-world problems involving equal groups, area/array, and number line models using basic multiplication and related division facts. Represent the problem situation using an equation with a symbol for the unknown.
Yum, candy! Make multiplication a little sweeter with this candy shop array. By listening to the narrator, second graders can find candy jars containing the correct multiplication array. To do so, they'll count rows and columns, gaining understanding of one-digit multiplication in the process. Also great for third graders, this math game is a tasty way for kids to practice multiplication.

For this learning log, I chose to focus on just the content area of Math because of the priority standards that have been provided to teachers from the state department. These are games that I would assign to students regularly for them to practice the skills to mastery. Since these standards were labeled as priority standards, these standards are needed to build a strong mathematical foundation and for students to continue growing. Also, these students have a heavier load and may be tested on SC Ready.
Why games?
Games to promote learning, make learning fun! Games that encourage students to try again, follow Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's flow theory. Furthermore, it helps students learn deeper things than just math standards...like life skills. Specifically to not give up when things get hard. Games have a way of getting harder the more you play, this makes you work harder! Students learn that they can be successful if they just try a little harder. So I bet you're wondering...all this emphasis on games...can video games make you smarter?
Other subjects need games too!
There are many gaming websites that students can access to gain confidence in all subject areas. Games can be utilized for students to practice skills learned in class, for them to reach mastery.
This website allows games to be searched using the search bar or by filtering by subject area, grade level, topic, or standard! Students will need to register for a free account and have limited game play time.
