Standard Focus: Use context clues to determine meanings of words and phrases.
Review Resources
For students to be successful, first I needed to conduct some research about the applications I plan to utilize throughout the lesson. I wanted to be sure these are the best applications and/or websites for students to use and be successful with. The Education.Com YouTube channel provides many tutorial videos for how to easily navigate and utilize Education.com and I found these to be very informational. Additionally, I also wanted to find a Google Slides tutorial for students be able to preview and review as needed to be successful with Google Slides. Before beginning this lesson, I thoroughly experimented with both to ensure I had a complete understanding before moving forward.
Prepare Resources
To preparation for the lesson, there were a few steps to consider...
- Context Clues anchor chart was copied for each student to add to their ELA folders.
- Google Form was created to test the students knowledge of context clues. (Objective: Students will complete an assessment via Google Forms to demonstrate an understanding of context clues strategies by passing the assessment with a score of 70% or higher.)
- Context Clues lesson was revised to meet students at their current understanding of Context Clues. Also, this was shared on Google Classroom for students to reference as needed in the future.
- Education.Com link to the "Lost Parents" game shared on Google Classroom for easy access for students. (Objective: Using Education.com, students will utilize the game "Lost Parents: Context Clues" to practice context clues standards by playing the game 3 times in one week.)
- Google Slides tutorial video (linked above) was shared with students via Google Classroom. Additionally students were encouraged on their free time during distance learning days to create a fun Google Slides to share fun facts with the teacher to gain understanding of the tools and capabilities of Google Slides before the lesson. (Objective: Using Google Slides, students will create an anchor chart/collage to demonstrate an ability to correctly identify unknown words and infer their meanings using context clues. )
Prepare the Enviornment
This lesson will consist of whole group direct instruction and individual skill practice. In the beginning of the lesson, students will participate in whole group instruction with students at their seats. The teacher will review the skill Context Clues and encourage student involvement in the class discussion about context clues. Throughout the whole group direct instruction, it is essential to have student understanding so they can be successful at individual game play and creation. While the students are working on their individual game play, teacher will circulate and keep an eye on students progress via Apple Classroom. This will ensure that students remain on task and are actively working throughout the lesson time span. Additionally, the teachers computer will be displayed via the SmartBoard to ensure that students follow the progression of the lesson. Lastly, the resources for students to add to their learning folder were copied and placed in an easily accessible location for students to quickly receive, review, and store in an appropriate place.

Provide the Learning Experience
To provide the best learning experience possible for my students, this lesson consisted of a few different levels of learning.
In the beginning of the lesson, the pre-assessment was individually paced for students to show their current understanding. The bulk of the lesson consisted of whole group learning, where the students learned context clues, practiced the skill, and became confident in their learning. The ending of the lesson was spent playing "Lost Parents" to practice our learning.
Teachers are available for support as needed throughout the entire lesson to clear any misconceptions or provide assistance when needed. If students completed their activities early, they are able to review and critique friends Google Slides anchor chart to further their learning.
